TOYCON 2014

screengrab from Toycon 2014 FB page

Since today is the last day of 13th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectible Convention (Toycon) 2014, with family in tow, I drove all the way from San Mateo, Rizal to SM Megamall this morning.

After taking our lunch at Dads buffet, with the two elder kids, we threaded to SM Megatrade Halls and bought entrance ticket for 130 pesos per head. The wife and youngest kid opted to visit National Bookstore and Cyberzone instead.

SOME SHOTS

The three halls were jam-packed with shoppers, cosplayers, artists, gamers, hobbyists and kibitzers. The countless toy exhibits were so massive that I couldn't help myself from admiring and staring at my childhood hero, Voltes V. I was looking for a new Voltes V robot but it seemed all were second-hand but kept in good condition by their owners.

Voltes V!
Is that Camp Big falcon on top?

Anyway, I was impressed nonetheless with Optimus Prime. This is my favorite shot.

Due to coming Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) movies, yes the remaining two sequels will be released in a few months; a huge area has been reserved to promote these films. The original costumes in the said movies were also in display.

MY LOOT!

FROM HERE!
TO HERE!

Aside from that, a less popular and stupid autobots aka Dinobots are now the new darling of the crowds due to the new Transformer movie that will be shown in less than a week.

It is a pity that they merely allocated 3 days for Asia's biggest and longest running convention for toys and collectibles. Even on its last day, people are still lining-up to enter Megatrade Halls. I hope they would allocate more viewing days on the next year's Toycon.

YOU CAN HAVE THIS FOR 62,001 PESOS!

Isa syang electrical engineer.

happy father's day papa

Baffled by Tokyo's rail network? Try SUICA card.

screengrab from: http://www.tokyopocketguide.com
Before coming to Tokyo we had some apprehensions on how we would survive Tokyo's dense network of subway and train. Moreover, train maps available on the net look intimidating especially for Tokyo first timers since there are dozens of train and subway lines crisscrossing Tokyo alone not to mention that they are operated by different companies having their own payment or fare system.

Fortunately, we were able to gather enough info on the net and decided that Suica card was the way to go for us to navigate Tokyo's touristy places. Suica card is the prepaid card for JR Yamanote line which runs around Tokyo metropolis.

Thus, after disembarking from Narita Express at Shinjuku station we searched for a Suica card dispensing machine. I saw several Suica machines but all were showing Japanese characters. Remembering my golden rule when traveling I asked a train staff manning the glass-enveloped room where I can buy Suica card. He pointed to a particular machine and mentioned "English" at the same time. I approached that machine bearing SUICA CARD logo on the top and noticed the "English" screen button at the top right corner of the monitor. Yes! This "English" button solved our transportation problem in Tokyo. After pressing the "English" button, all the characters on the monitor magically turned into readable alphabet. I selected "Purchase New card" then entered the amount I wanted to charge the card. Be aware though that there is 500 Yen deposit for each card. I selected 3,000 Yen on the monitor to have 2,500 Yen charge. After the transaction the machine churned out a Suica card. I repeated this procedure five times.

There are two types of Suica machines if I am not mistaken. The first type is the Suica card dispensing machine while the second marked with "Ticket" on top is mainly used for charging your card. Usually you will find one card dispensing machine among several ticket machines. Just to add, both machines are touch screen and user friendly.

the two green color (ticket) machines are for charging while the farthest machine is for issuing Suica card

Having conquered Singapore and Hong Kong's Metros and subway we found it pretty easy to navigate and transfer to Tokyo's different rail lines by merely using our Suica cards. Just tap it when entering the station and tap it again when leaving or exiting the station. Your fare and remaining balance will be shown on the small screen right after you have entered or exit. If you hear a loud beep upon tapping your card when exiting then it means your card doesn't have enough credit to pay the fare. No worries; just approach the customer service or recharge your card at any ticket machines inside the station before trying to exit again.

Charging your Suica card doesn't require special skills, just follow the "English" procedures on the monitor or screen.

typical ticket machine

- Press "English" button at the top right corner of the monitor.
- Insert your Suica card.
- Select the amount you intend to charge your card.
- Insert your banknotes and/or drop the coins at the funnel shaped coin collector.
- In case you don't have exact amount then insert higher bill. Your change will come out from the machine.
- Your current balance will appear on the screen
- Take your card

Though Tokyo's Metros and subways are operated by different companies you can interchange their cards such as Suica and Pasmo in all their stations. Because of this we were able to visit the following places using our Suica cards only.

- Disneyland
- Disneysea
- Ginza
- Odaiba
- Akihabara
- Shibuya / Harajuku / Shinjuku
- Nakamise/Sensoji Temple
- Nippori (Keisei Skyliner)
- Yoyogi Park/Meiji Shrine
- Tokyo Tower

In addition, always bear in mind that nothing comes cheap in Tokyo (except Gundam and Uniqlo products) including train fare. Each of us consumed 3,500 Yen, excluding 500 Yen deposit, just to visit the places I have posted above. I heard Suica card can also be used in vending machines; we didn't try since we have to find ways to consume our loose change or coins.

with Keisei Skyliner ticket

Finally, we also used our Suica card to purchase Keisei Skyliner tickets at Nippori station on our trip back to Narita airport. Upon arrival at Narita airport terminal 2, I surrendered our 5 Suica cards to Narita Express counter at the basement level. For each card, I received 500 Yen deposit while a refund fee of 220 Yen was deducted from the existing balance.

How did I enjoy my lunch at Vikings SM Marikina

I am not a fanboy of eat-all-you-can buffets to be honest. In my understanding these establishments would try to find ways to lessen the cost of food preparation while at the same time charge diners of unavoidable exorbitant fees such as drinks and service charges. Moreover, there is always a tendency of filling your tummy with various cheaply prepared foods.

I remember vividly a few years back, my family and I had a very uncomfortable experience in one of the famous eat-all-you-can buffets at SM North. For five of us the bill reached almost 4,000 pesos due to steep price of drinks since they only provided free water along with the buffet. After our meal, I felt bloated while my eldest son suffered minor abdominal discomfort and vomited at the toilet of SM North.

Fast forward, my daughter graduated as cum laude at UP Diliman recently. Any Dad would be proud of their child's great accomplishment considering that UPD is the top notch university in the country. Thus, when my daughter begged me to have another family celebration in Vikings at SM City Marikina and avail its on-going "graduation promo" I couldn't refuse. She added that she just needs to show some supporting documents such as picture, school ID and other related school credentials attesting that she belongs to batch 2014 to avail her of a free meal. The catch is she should be accompanied by at least 3 paying adults. That would be a clear savings of 688 pesos or I would simply pay four instead of five; a clear 20% discount was in the offing.

In short, my daughter reserved a table for family of five through FB page of Vikings SM Marikina last 15th of May. We arrived at past 11 am and immediately guided to our table by one of their staffs.

Interestingly, the foods and trays are lined-up from the entrance up to the other end of the entire dining area. I was impressed with the wide selections and variety of menus. Equally interesting was the interior decors of the area. It seemed we were dining inside a hotel.

I refrained from immediately filling my plate and gobbling foods like what other diners were doing. I surveyed the snaking line of food trays and took my time tasting most of them. Likewise, I enjoyed the bottomless draft beer. Let me show you how I enjoyed my lunch at Vikings.

Round 1

Nothing extraordinary on my salad plate except the slices of green and black olives and the cherry tomatoes.

Round 2

Thin slices of boneless lamb leg, lemon fish fillet, veggie, fried squid and soy chicken. Having worked in Middle-East for many years where lambs were part of their staple food I can attest that the lamb leg was a let-down though the fish fillet saved the day.

Round 3

A couple of thin slices of tasty but fatty Angus beef from the carving station, adobong lamb sa dilaw na luya, jelly fish and spicy bean curd. This plateful was so remarkably tasty and yummy. Chewing the chunky jelly fish made me remember my Chinese grandpa, he used to cook jelly fish when he was still with us. The lamb in dilaw na luya was equally superb though a bit spicy.

Round 4

Well, the sweets were not that impressive at all albeit its wide selections. Even the coffee jelly lacks caffeine punch while there wasn't any oompss and aahhs for the cake.

Round 5

Nothing would go wrong in having buttered French baguette paired with steaming cup of brewed coffee.

Round 6

Dared by the wife and kids to have another visit to the buffet tables, I searched for something unique. I fished from the buffet tables atchara, salted eggs, fried sweet potato roll, salmon sashimi and ensaladang talong.

Round 7

Whenever we dine at any Chinese restaurants I always asked for a cup of green tea to sooth my taste buds. However, at Vikings they only serve Jasmine tea which I found to be also quite refreshing for my tummy. I love ending a good and satisfying meal with a warm plain tea.

SOME INDOOR SHOTS

lots of sweets...

If you will ask me if 688 pesos is worth the trip to Vikings at SM Marikina then I will reply in positive. It's bang for the buck especially when you consider their minuscule 0.05% service charge - not to mention their different promos such as the graduation promo we have availed.

Allow me to give you some typical examples how you could get your money's worth at Vikings. A mug of draft beer that costs around 50 pesos in any decent bars is included at the buffet of any Vikings branch; I gulped two mugs. How about the price of black coffee, pastries and sweets at a decent coffee shops? It is not pretty easy to find a restaurant where you can have unlimited slices of Angus beef and boneless lamb leg at the same time. Moreover, the dining ambiance and the comfort of tasting the overwhelming varieties of foods was simply awesome at Vikings SM City Marikina. Gone are the usual hordes of restless diners in queue due to wide selections of foods while the numbers of guests have been limited inside their dining area as well. In addition, you would seldom see empty food trays since they are being replenished regularly.

We arrived at Vikings at around 11 am and left at almost 2 pm. To honor your reservation you need to be there not later than 11:30 am or else your slot will be given to walk-ins.

Do I look like a foodie? One of their staffs asked me to answer their electronic survey using their unique tablet.

Our fifth day - Sayonara Tokyo!

On our last day in Tokyo, my wife and I woke up at 5:30 am. Since there was a lone T&B in our apartment we normally fell in queue for our daily morning rituals. Hence, to avoid losing precious time, the wife and I usually woke up early and after we have finished using the T&B the kids would be woken up.

I confirmed to the owner of our apartment that she could send her maid at 8 am for cleaning since we would leave the place at 7:30 am to catch our 11:45 am flight back to Manila. Since we have packed most of our belongings the night before we had ample time to take our breakfast in our apartment. More so, I have to segregate our trashes and dispose them as well at different bins inside the trash room of the building.

Harajuku station

on our last day I learned that we can go to Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi park from Harajuku

With all our carry bags and one big trolley luggage we threaded toward Harajuku station and waited for the JR Yamanote train that would bring us to Nippori station where Keisei Skyliner train would stop and pick-up passengers going to Narita airport.

Upon arrival at Nippori station, we quickly searched Keisei Skyliner station. I was expecting that like Narita Express we also need to purchase tickets over the counter. I was wrong. We could use our Suica cards to purchase KS tickets according to the two very helpful Japanese ladies manning the Keisei Liner entrance. They beckoned us to charge our Suica cards first at the ordinary ticketing/charging machine due to insufficient fund. Soon after, they assisted us in purchasing Keisei Skyliner tickets at a different ticketing machine. They even showed us how to select or reserve our seats. Initially, they asked us whether we wanted a cheaper ticket but longer travel time due to several stops or the Skyliner which was faster. We chose the latter to save time. It costs us 2,470 Yen each; still cheaper compared with Narita Express which costs more than 3,000 Yen per person when traveling back to the airport.

here comes our fast train

comfy seats with separate luggage rack at the front

In short, we reached Narita airport after 36 minutes. It was a smooth, comfortable and fast ride. There wasn't any stop-over either.

A word of advice, if you have bought Uniqlo apparels at Ginza avoid wearing them on your way back to Manila. Chances are several passengers would be wearing Uniqlo clothes easily distinguishable from other passengers. In fact, I saw at least 3 guys wearing Uniqlo shirts and coat during our check-in. Fortunately, I resisted the temptation of wearing my loot from Uniqlo.

Kit Kat's exotic flavors

Upon disembarking from Keisei Skyliner, I went back to Narita Express counter to refund our Suica Cards. They deducted 220 Yen as refund fee for each card. I received 500 Yen deposit for each card plus the remaining balance less the 220 Yen refund fee.

As I expected, after check-in, the wife and kids loitered and surveyed the different Duty Free Shops searching for the famous Kit Kat Green Tea. I knew they would search every nook just to find this exotic flavor. We ended up buying not only the Green Tea but also the Strawberry Cheesecake flavor while my youngest son was after his all-time favorite Pocky. We also bought two packs of Mochi Balls.

By the way, don't be fooled of the posted price in duty free shops in case you intend to spend all your remaining Yens. Oftentimes the 8% tax is not included on the posted price.

great view of the airport tarmac

We took our lunch before racing toward the boarding gate. The airport is truly impressive and massive. On our way to the boarding gate we had a wide view of the tarmac. It seemed we were watching a mammoth LCD screen where the huge jetliners looked like toys.

During our flight back to Manila I can't help but reminisce our family bonding in Tokyo. Surely this place was unique and especial among all the places we have visited. For our entire stay we never felt unsafe or threatened in any place in Tokyo. More so, all the Japanese we have met were polite and courteous though lacking in English communication. Nonetheless, they tried their best to assist us even by sign language. Lastly, one way or the other, we had established some connections to our childhood dreams of seeing the land of our favorite Japanese characters like the Gundams, Anime characters, Hello Kitty to name a few.

Upon arriving home, we marveled at our souvenirs from the land of the rising sun. I promised my kids that if they would continue their good performance in school and the visa would be waived by the Japanese government we would return to Japan to visit Harry Potter.
