Dad's Review - Planning to buy a TCL LED TV? Think twice!

Last 07 July 2012, I bought a 32 inches borderless TCL flat screen from our favorite SM Appliance Center at SM North EDSA basement. Actually, I was initially checking the Samsung Series 4 LCD but due to very competitive price of TCL I gave its lady promodiser a chance to explain and promote her merchandise.

My TCL receipt
According to her, SM was pushing TCL brand in the Philippines mainly due to competitive price with quality comparable to other established LCD brands such as Sony and Samsung. Indeed, I was impressed on the performance and clarity of TCL flat screen inside the showroom when compared to other brands. In short, I purchased a TCL borderless flat screen 32E5300 LED TV with 1 year warranty for 22,995 pesos.

I mounted my TCL on the wall and I wasn't disappointed because the picture was crystal clear while the audio was quite loud for our 12 square meter master bedroom. Though TCL is a Chinese brand, I have no qualms with my flat screen until a few months back.

My borderless 32" TCL flat screen at the back of my new 42" LG 3D TV

During my previous vacation in May 2013, I noticed a thumb size black spot on my TCL TV. I thought it was caused by dead pixels so I immediately complained to SM Appliance Center Customer Service. The SMAC staff logged my complaint and coordinated with TCL for our warranty claim. Since I would be leaving for my work in few days, my wife was the one who coordinated with COOLTRONICS, the service contractor of TCL, regarding the repair of our flat screen.

warranty report last May 2013

The COOLTRONICS technician came to our house and after checking the unit he explained that the thumb size black spot wasn't caused by dead pixels but rather a misplaced adhesive tape inside the panel. He simply removed the said tape and our TCL was back in service in no time at all.

This vacation, I arrived 1st week of August, I noticed a straight black line appearing intermittently on my TCL flat screen. I showed it to my wife and she told me that she remembered that the black line started appearing several weeks after our TCL was repaired last May 2013. She never bothered to mention it to me because she thought it was caused by our Digi-box since TV pixelation was occurring when our Digi-box was connected due to some technical problem according to the cable TV technicians.

THE DREADED BLACK LINE OF MY TCL

I have to attend to more pressing matters thus I wasn't able to bring this problem to SMAC attention until several days back. I approached initially the TCL promodiser and explained to her the problem. She instructed me to coordinate with the SMAC Customer Service which I did. During my discussion with the CS staff, he reverted back to the same TCL promodiser. They concluded that since my unit was beyond the 1 year warranty period they asked me to contact directly COOLTRONICS. In fairness, the promodiser and SMAC CS staffs were both polite and courteous while having a discussion with me.

I contacted COOLTRONICS yesterday and explained the problem; the lady informed me that since my unit was beyond the warranty period then I need to pay 500 pesos "check-up" fee. I argued that the problem was intermittent and probably caused by the workmanship during the last warranty repair in May 2013. Since it was holiday, she replied that she would call me the following day; she would coordinate this matter to the technician who repaired my unit before, she added.

I received a call from COOLTRONICS today. The technician who repaired my unit explained to me that the black straight line I am seeing now on my TCL flat screen wasn't related to the problem he repaired last time. According to him, the intermittent black line is an indication of failing LCD panel or in layman's term "dead pixels." He added that there is a possibility that more black lines would appear in the future and the only way to remedy or solve the problem is to replace the actual LCD panel (not the entire TV) which could be very costly. After a few more minutes of technical discussions I decided not to send my unit for repair anymore.

All told, I therefore ask all hard working Dads out there to think twice before buying a cheap TCL flat screen. I am saying this not only due to the problems I have encountered but mainly because when compared to other flat screens I bought, TCL was the only unit that gave my wife and I headache and wasted our time in just a matter of one year.

My first LCD was a Samsung 20 inch which I bought in Abu Dhabi City, UAE last 2007. It was submerged under flood water during typhoon Ondoy in September 2009. My neighbor cum technician simply cleaned the unit with water and I was able to use it again. Of course, some minor problems occurred later due to flooding but no dead pixels until now.

My second LCD was a Sanyo 24 inch which I bought from SMAC 2 years back. My in-laws who are staying with us are using it right now after their 21 inch AIWA old school TV gave in recently.

This TCL is my third flat screen. In just one year of use I have experienced the problems mentioned above. I couldn't imagine the next problem that would appear on this flat screen later on.

My latest flat screen is an LG 42 inch 3D TV. I bought it recently at SMAC too and now adoring the wall of my new entertainment room. I just hope that my latest toy will stand the test of time, LOL.

By the way, regardless whether I bought a lemon TV or it was simply a poor decision on my part to prioritize a cheaply priced high-end item, hard earned money has been used. Anyway, I would just wait for other black lines to appear and when I am not comfortable anymore with my TCL flat screen I would replace it with another brand instead of spending on a costly repair.

Sayonara TCL!

It is fortunate that my new entertainment room has been completed. In case I want to watch a movie I simply go upstairs and watch it on my 42 inches LG Cinema 3D flat screen. As a Dad, it is truly disheartening to see an expensive item deteriorated in short period of time.

January 2014

April 2014

In less than 2 years, at least 10 lines have appeared on my TCL. Way to go TCL!!!

July 9 2015

After 3 years and 2 days. This piece of crap will definitely go to the bin on December.

09 September 2015

TCL was brought by kids to their dorm; my daughter loves to watch the her favorite night time "teleserye." Yes! I found a way to dispose it without throwing it to the bin.

Since the wife also loves to watch her nightly primetime local TV series she opted to watch them in our entertainment room; I felt I was a refugee inside our house. Yesterday, I decided that I need to do drastic action otherwise my vacation would be ruined without being able to watch any sports and movie channels.

As replacement, I bought a series 4 Samsung 32 inches LED TV for 14,300 pesos. Unlike my previous TCL that can only read 500 GB HDD with one year warranty for around 24 k pesos, my new flat screen is capable of reading up to 1 TB HDD with two year warranty and with clearer video and bass audio. More so, it has built-in anti-surge protection and with 2 USB ports that are capable of transferring or copying files between 2 external drives.

While shopping for a replacement TV a TCL sales staff tried to coerce us in buying her cheaply priced products. There is no way she can convince us to even have a second look at her TCL products.

My new toy adoring our bedroom's wall

Disclaimer: This is an actual experience of a working Dad and could be different from other Dads' experiences about this brand of flat screen.

  1. nice review.. but i've noticed that the vertical line appeared just after the technician fixed the tv.. i guess, the vertical line is caused by a lose contact on the FFC.. place a tape on the bezel on the TV align to the vertical line on your screen.. if you can open ur tv, it will point to w/c IC & FFC is responsible for the vertical line.. you can put some soft material on top of the IC and FFC so that it will put some pressure when you put back the TV.. i hope this will fix your vertical lineproblem ..

    1. I was planning to bring my TCL to a nearby LOVE Electronics Shop but recently I noticed a second straight line appearing intermittently. The service technician could be right. In this case, since my unit is now beyond the warranty period, I will just try to bear with these dead pixels or straight lines. I will post the pic of my TCL with 2 straight lines.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am too busy nowadays and household electronics is not my cup of tea.

  2. Your post just made me confirmed that this brand (TCL) is indeed of very poor quality, I too just made a big mistake of buying this piece of crap which I have chosen over a trusted brand. I bought mine in SM as well, a 40" LED TV originally priced at Php45,495.xx offered with a tempting Php10,000.xx discount.

The moment I turned on the unit, I immediately noticed abnormal brigthness on all corners of the screen but ignored it because of the 1-year warranty. Weeks later, 2 little red dots (dead pixels) began to appear somewhere at the center, alarmed by this I immediately called the customer service. A month or so the tech delivered a replacement and to my surprise, the replacement unit has dead pixels as well and far worst than the other. Another replacement unit was delivered a month later and this one looked good no more of the previously mentioned problems (and so I thought).

Months later, warranty expired, I began noticing a red dot appearing and disappearing occassionally somewhere in the middle of the screen, with all the hassles and what not I decided what the heck I think I can live on it, pretty annoying indeed but just like every busy people out there I got more important matters to attend to and have it fixed is just optional.

Unfortunately, just waking up this morning turning on the unit to check on the news, was surprised to see the TV screen all messed up looking like a lose video or signal cable or something. Removed all the connected cables at the back except the power cable, changed source to test, powering on and off, SAME RESULT. Very disappointed, hard lesson learned to STAY AWAY FROM TCL PRODUCTS from now on!

    Thank you for this post.

  10. Yeah, I've experienced the same. A year after we purchased TCL 32inch LED TV a vertical line appeared and then another year after, the screen has so much lines it covered half of the screen, very DISAPPOINTING.

  11. So disappointed! My wife bought this TCL LED Model LED32B3350 while I was away for a few months and when I came home with an external sound system to connect to the darn thing, imagine the look on my face when I couldn't find the audio out connector. Whaaaaaat!

    1. Wrong! I bought a TCL 55' LED TV back in 2013. I have always been super protective of my investments and would not let anyone lift or move the unit by the screen or even place any pressure on the screen for fear of snapping the light circuits. Additionally, I regularly dusted and vacuumed the back. My unit started displaying vertical lines about 6 months ago and has steadily gotten worse to the point now where it needs to be disposed of. This is not an issue of maintenance. It's poor quality issues. Thankfully, it sounds like you got a good one. Be thankful.

  17. Sh*t, if I have read this review, I wouldn't have bought the TV! I bought a 40-inch TCL LED Smart TV yesterday for our transfer to our new condo unit. Since we do not have a cable line yet, we used the Hard Drive with movies stored in it and it was very very very good. My wife and I totally love it. It's big, it's bright, and it's smart TV. We can browse the net, access the channels in just an app. I hope it would not deteriorate fast. 2-3 years is enough for me. But I am hoping for 5 years and up with this lovely, adorable Smart LED TV.

  23. Our TCL is 2 years old, and the TV started to display an intermittent black vertical line on the left third of the screen about 6 months ago, and now is evident most of the time. Sometimes the line will go away after the TV has been on for a while, which makes me think it is thermally sensitive connectivity such as the ribbon connectors on the panel or perhaps a deteriorating component like a cheap capacitor. If a "loose" ribbon cable, putting something like a piece of foam tape on the back of the cable can sometimes help with connectivity if that can be 'engineered' to put pressure on the cable when the case is closed. But that's a crap shoot often. The latter, cheap electrolytic caps, are the bane of inexpensive LCDs. A lot of owners open inexpensive TVs up to find many caps already burst and failing. If you are handy with a soldering iron and don't mind spending $5-20 in caps, there may be an opportunity to fix these TVs oneself. ...assuming that is even the issue with the TCLs. If the LCD panel itself is bad it isn't really DIY fixable unless one wants to replace the whole panel, in which case one may as well purchase a new TV.

I asked them to play a movie and had them crank the volume up and it was at 100 and the audio sucked. Then we asked them to play the same movie from an LG TV and the sound was awesome and the picture quality was crisp and clearer. Good thing we changed our mind. We are planning to settle down with a Samsung 48" bundled with an HTS. Thanks for the blog, we knew we made the right choice to walk away from this piece of crap.

  33. Last July 2012, I bought a 32 inch LG LED TV with 2 years warranty at Wilcon Depot, Visayas Ave. A few months before its warranty expired, i noticed white smoke spewed out from the unit while it's on. The LG serviceman who repaired it said the short circuit was caused by sudden electrical surge which the LG TV could not cope with. I answered back and asked why this thing happened when LG supposedly should have anticipated this problem and therefore should have addressed the problem before release of the product in the market.

Since it was repaired, I was appeased and hoped that it will be the last problem I will encounter with my LG TV. I was wrong. Just a few months after the warranty expired, I noticed that the pictures displayed on screen disappeared every 2 seconds. I called the LG service Center and requested for a home service. The LG serviceman came to check on the unit then told me that my LG TV is beyond repair. The only solution is LCD panel replacement that will cost me around Php10,000. To make matters worse, the serviceman told me that LG no longer sell spare LCD panel for this purpose. In short, my LG TV is doomed to die too soon than expected. By the way, I paid PHp600 for that futile check-up because that was their company policy.

Because I am busy with my work, I ignored the problem hoping that it will adjust back to its original appearance. But the problem went on for a few more months until the “disappearance” was replaced with thick horizontal lines distributed evenly on screen every 2 seconds. The problem went on until June this year when my LG TV no longer functions – no pictures and no sound at all. All I could say is f*ck you LG.

I believe there are many of us LG TV consumers who have suffered the same experience. Let’s group together and bring this matter to the proper authority like DTI and to LG Company because this could be a violation of the Consumer Act of the Philippines (RA 7394).

To the owner of this blog whose latest TV is LG, good luck to you, sir. In case it will suffer the same fate as mine, I won’t be surprised anymore. Please update us in that regard.

BTW, I found this OLX ad with the same problem http://olx.ph/item/broken-lg-3d-led-tv-55lw5600-needs-repairn-ID6ODCf.html?p=12#d5acaeb3d1

    1. My LG is still working fine. It is my TCL that I am planning to throw. By the way, electrical surge can really damage any electronic appliances that is why some of the manuals are recommending disconnecting your appliances if there is a possibility of electrical surge like nearby welding jobs, lightning and power interruption/restoration.

By the way, whatever happens after the warranty period becomes our responsibility. That is my opinion only.

      Delete
  34. Actually, I did not buy the electrical-surge as the cause because there was none (welding jobs, lightning, power interruption/restoration, etc) that I observed when the short circuit occurred. I should know because the light in the living room was turned on and it should flicker if there was indeed an electrical surge at that time.

As regards to the warranty, yes I agree that it is no longer the company's responsibility but ours. However, units that last only with its warranty period of 1 or 2 years are not acceptable and clear deception. RA 7394 assures us of quality products and protects us against deceptive, unfair and unconscionable sales acts and practices.

To the moneyed individuals, this could be negligible but to those whose earnings are just enough for their basic needs, this is not acceptable.

  47. Bought 32" TCL Android TV LED32S4690S. It doesn't have any problem when it comes to audio and picture. It will stay on TCL LOGO for almost an hour, or it will run but the "starting smart system, please wait" notification will on on your screen until you're done watching. It's also slow when trying to access the menu. It first occured 2 months after it was bought. For a year and 2 months, i'm going to give up and will depend on branded TVs as they really stand the test of time.

  48. All TV parts are the same. They usually came from the same factories. Different companies purchase parts and assemble it and named as their own brand. No TV brand manufactures all parts and component just to make their own TV. Don't be fooled by those marketing strategies and brand name. One good example is a laptop, there are many brands and have you notice that they used the same CPU? either Intel or AMD and etc. It means they purchase this CPU and assemble as their own. Ask a LCD TV technician and you will know.

    5. You are correct about spare parts as every electronic device have almost the same semiconductors used in it but the engineering design how to dessipate heat how to use capacitors in support of a transistor and resistor, diode etc is a big factor to the quality of a device. Different TVs brands and engineering manufactured in the same plant will produce different performance. It's the engineering that matters most.

  54. Even the TCL aircon sucks.... bottomline, TCL is not a good brand and after sales service is also very poor..... When you call customer service, they always refer to this certain "Mam Weng" that they need to call in head office to ask the status of the service call/repair that you requested and she has been always been out for snack or just out and cannot be contacted....
Poor TCL... hope their management gets to addressed all these issues...

  55. I knew it, TCL is not a good brand but still we bought it last June 3, 2016. We have this TCL 50 inches smart tv. And it was good for the last 5 months, good audio, pictures super hd.We chose it because the sales lady is good in communication skills plus it was sale that time for P22,000 plus. So the problem on the first 5 months with our unit is that. We are watching and suddenly no pictures came out it was all black but there is audio in it. We tried to change channels and its the same. So we went to the SM Cauayan City where we bought and told us that someone will look for it. We waited for a week for the technician to see the unit. But on that waiting period we keep going back to the SM Appliances to update if when will be the technician come to see the unit. After a week they came and told us to get the unit and has to be repaired and change something on it i dont know what its called. The staff kept us irritate because it took a month and a week for them to send us back the unit. We did not pay anything because we have 1 year warranty. And after 7 months, as we are watching on youtube there is suddenly a vertical lines appear on the screen. Its very tiny vertical line and the color is green. It is not moving. We change channels, we reinsert our cables, we replug the socket but nothing changed. I dont know what to do with this TCL unit. Not we are having our regret. We should have bought that samsung tv before. Waste of money and headache. Just sharing my story.

Anyway I already bought this TCL so let us see if I'll suffer the same fate like others in this brand.

  57. Hi, we also bought TCL 40" LED TV on June 24, 2017 at SM City Cauayan. In just two months of using it, a thin, vertical, black line appeared. In a few days, the line became bigger. On September 5, we referred it to TCL to claim for warranty. The service center took the unit on September 14. TCL's commitment is to repair or replace it in a month's time. Last week, I made a follow-up and I was informed that the unit is for replacement just waiting for a delivery line-up. I called again this morning (Oct. 20), and I was told the same excuse, no specific date and to follow up again next week (sigh). I just hope that this is not just an excuse to hide delay in their after sales service. If their product sucks, they could at least be good in appeasing their already dissappointed consumers.

  60. I bought a TCL 40" model LED40E5900US in robinson's appliances last 2017 and after a year it suddenly malfunctioned, while watching the screen became blank and no sound. Only the power led indicator is showing, a technician checked it but said the spares for the power supply is not available. This unit became a junk display due to unavailability of spare parts till today, hoping somebody knows where to buy this complete power supply board and to finally try to fix it by an electronics technician. Those who are planning to buy a TCL LED Tv's be aware of the problems encountered by consumers and prefer the good branded names that's worth your hard-earned money.

  62. Same here..Just bought my 55 inch TCL last July 2020 and still covered by 2 years warranty. The customer service is quite slow to response and after getting a lot of information. They told me that the team will need to pull-out the unit and repair. Reading all your comments, it seems that those pull-out units was replaced by an even worst LCD screen, rendering your TV as a rubbish after it goes beyond the warranty period. TCL TV is a disposable TV in less than 1 year. I wasted 25k paying for this fucking TV. NO TO TCL again.
